Westside Christmas Market & Family Day 2016

Forget the Black Fridays and the Cyber Mondays… the 8th of December is the traditional shopping day in many parts of Ireland and Westside Christmas Market is honouring this tradition in style. The Christmas Market has grown steadily over recent years and is now the ‘main event’ in a day-long celebration of Christmas fun for all the family.

The Christmas Market itself runs from 10:30am to 3:30pm and takes place in Westside Resource Centre. The market is organised by a committee of local community groups - in conjunction with Galway City Partnership - and the beautiful produce is handmade by the community groups. The proceeds from the market are reinvested back into local community activities.

Throughout the day there will be a number of open events that people visiting the market can attend and enjoy. Westside Library will be hosting the children from Scoil Croí Íosa for Carol Singing from 11:00am until 12pm. Later, at 2:15pm, the Library will also be the venue for Stories & Crafts for children. The little ones are bound to enjoy the seasonal theme.

At Westside Resource Centre our creative writers and friends will take to the ‘Open Mic’ for a session of readings entitled ‘Seasonal Memories’. This event will run from 12:30pm to 1:30pm and all are welcome to attend. At 2.00pm world-famous seanchaí Eddie Lenihan will take to the stage for an hour of storytelling and tall tales for grown-ups.

To finish the day on a high note, we will have live music and refreshments at the Resource Centre’s ‘Community Café’ from about 3:00pm until 4:00pm. This will be followed by the ever-popular Christmas Raffle with lots of prizes and surprises. All are welcome… full details from Westside Resource Centre.

All events are free and everybody is welcome.

Westside Age Inclusion 'Fun Quiz' a Success

Westside Age Inclusion's Fun Quiz in Westside Resource Centre was a great success. This Social Inclusion Week event brought together people from across the community and a great night was had by all. There were lots of spot prizes generously donated by local businesses and individuals. Many thanks to Alfie and John for their careful preparation and lively MC-ing and to the many helpers who were on hand to give them advice on the night ;-).

Culture Night 2016 in Westside

Following a series of talks and events commemorating the 1916 Rising, Westside Resource Centre presents 'The Wind That Shakes the Barley'. Directed by Ken Loach and starring Cillian Murphy and Padraic Delaney, this film won the prestigious Palme d'Or at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival.

In the turbulent years after the 1916 Rising, Ireland went through the War of Independence and then the Civil War. The Wind That Shakes the Barley tells the story of two brothers who, having fought together against the British forces, find themselves on different sides during the Civil War.
